The Habit Loop Model is a proven framework for understanding and changing habits. It's a cycle that involves a cue, a routine, and a reward.
The Habit Loop Model is divided into three parts: the cue (trigger for an automatic behavior to start), the routine (the behavior itself), and the reward (the benefit gained from the behavior). For instance, consider a habit of daily jogging. The cue might be seeing your running shoes, the routine is the act of jogging and the reward could be the feeling of refreshment afterwards. To change the habit, one has to identify and manipulate these components effectively. For instance, to stop junk food snacking, identify the cue (maybe boredom), change the routine (snack on healthy alternatives), and reward remains the same (satisfaction).
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." - Aristotle
