Self-Serving Bias

The Self-Serving Bias is a common cognitive distortion where individuals attribute their successes to internal factors but blame external factors for their failures.
The Self-Serving Bias is a mental model that refers to the tendency of individuals attributing positive events and successes to their own character or abilities, while attributing negative events or failures to external circumstances beyond their control. For example, if a student does well on a test, they might attribute their success to their intelligence or hard work (internal factors). However, if they do poorly, they might blame it on the difficulty of the test or distractions during studying (external factors). This bias helps individuals maintain their self-esteem, but it can also prevent personal growth and self-improvement.
We tend to judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their actions - Stephen M.R. Covey
